Practicing in Family and Juvenile Courts for nearly twenty years, Tara has served as a prosecutor of Child Abuse and Neglect cases in Jefferson Family Court for eight years, as a public defender for Juvenile Offenders in Jefferson Juvenile Court and as a Juvenile Court prosecutor in Washington, D.C.. Tara has also served as Chief Deputy for Family Court Operations for Jefferson Circuit Court Clerk David L. Nicholson and is currently in private practice.

In addition to her long term work in Family Court, Tara’s community service includes serving on the boards of Court Appointed Special Advocates, MB CARE (a joint venture of Maryhurst and Uspiritus) and the Child Sexual Assault and Exploitation Prevention Board of the Kentucky Attorney General’s Office. In 2013, Tara received the Family Law Attorney of the Year recognition from the Louisville Bar Association.

Tara has a passion for Jefferson Family Court and helping those families who come before it. In addition to the endorsement of Citizens for Better Judges, Tara has been endorsed by the Jefferson County Teachers Association, the Jefferson County Fraternal Order of Police, the United Auto Workers, the Central Labor Council, the Building and Construction Trades Council and the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 227.
Tara Hagerty grew up in the Okolona neighborhood of Jefferson County and graduated from Southern High School in 1985. Tara has been married to attorney Tim Hagerty for nineteen years. They have a son, Jack, who is a high school student.

Tara graduated from U of L in 1990 with a BA in Political Science and served as student body president there her senior year. In 1993, Tara graduated from U of L’s law school. She is licensed to practice law in Kentucky and the District of Columbia.
